Ascocentrum miniatum

Ascocentrum miniatum [Lindley] Schlechter 1913 is the type species of the genus Ascocentrum. In Nature, these plants occur mainly in warmer to intermediate, humid climates of the foothills of the Himalayas, in Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and the Philippines. These monopodial epiphytic orchids grow on deciduous trees. They have a short, simple to bifurcate stem (max. 15–18 cm). These miniature vandaceous orchids have thick, fleshy, v-shaped, 10-12 cm long leaves rising up in height. When flowering, numerous upright spikes, up to 25 cm long, emerge from between the leaves, bearing 30 or more, brilliant orange/red blooms, the 1-1,5 cm width flowers have an orange/yellow lip with a bright orange spur and a black anther cap. This is truly impressive for a plant of this size, as dainty, dense spikes of orange flowers surround the spike and last for many weeks. This species is described as a very easy grower, drought tolerant and with a great floral display.
