Cattleya loddigesii

Cattleya loddigesii Lindl. 1823 - Its name derives from the surname of Loddiges brothers, who first described it as Epidendrum violaceum in 1819. This was the first Cattleya orchid to be cultivated in Europe. The genus Cattleya has 113 species distributed throughout South America. Originally from Brazil, this plant is found on the banks of rivers and wetlands. It is an epiphytic plant sympodial growth, whose size may vary between 20 and 50 cm. The pseudobulbs are slightly flattened, elliptical and wide. Each pseudobulb is covered by bracts and stems 2-3 leathery leaves. Flowering occurs between autumn and spring (southern hemisphere). The flower stem can contain up to 5 flowers, born of spathes, the flowers are fragrant, have 8 cm on average, with a color ranging from light pink to lilac purple. The lip is gently crisp with cream shade. The preferred climate is temperate with moderate light.
