Dendrobium miyakei

Dendrobium miyakei Schlechter 1919 is also known as D. goldschmidtianum. The species is a member of the Pedilonum section. This section has many showy orchids in a rainbow of colors and wide range of temperature tolerences to suit different growing conditions. Pedilonum comes from the Greek word “pedilon”, which means slipper or shoe, this refers to the long mentum or chinlike projection, formed by the joining of the sepals. There was much confusion in the section, with species being known by several different names, but there are about 47 species in the section with the center of distribution being Papua New Guinea. D. miyakei is a lowland species found most often growing as an epiphyte on branches of ficus trees in the jungles of Taiwan and the Philippines. It has clustered, unbranched, cane-like stems, carrying many, deciduous, lanceolate, pointed leaves. They bloom twice a year on a short inflorescence that arises from the nodes along the older leafless canes, with 4 to 8 small flowers in a cluster.
