Schomburgkia crispa

Schomburgkia crispa Lindley 1838 - The  Schomburgkia genus has 22 known species and is named for Richard Schomburgk, a German botanist who explored British Guiana during the 19th century. Species in this genus are either ephiphytic or lithophytic. S. crispa was the first species of Schomburgkia to be described and is the type species for the genus, is a large sized, hot growing species found in the tropical areas of Venezuela, Surinam, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador. This plant is an epiphyte with clavate-fusiform, compressed, angled and sulcate pseudobulbs enveloped in youth by several membraneous and acute sheaths, carrying two apical, rigid, coriaceous, erect-patent, oblong and cuneate leaves. It blooms in the summer on a racemose, many flowered, 60 to 110 cm long inflorescence. It has beautiful glossy maroon, 5 to 6 cm width flowers with heavily undulated petals. The lip is narrow and lighter in color with a yellow triangular blotch near the tip.
